What to do if information is missing

Unknown Page Information

What do I do if there are no page numbers, How can I tell which edition the book is?

If you are referencing a book, chapter or journal article you should be able to find the page number(s) quite easily. Even with online journals the page numbers can usually be found as many are available as pdf files (Tip - you may have to look at the contents page to find them). However online newspapers may not provide page numbers due to the online format being very different from the hard-copy version.

For this field, the following rules apply:

  • For a book chapter or a journal article you should give start and finish pages, e.g. 327-342.
  • If you are quoting from a specific page you should cite that page number e.g. 324.

The 'Document it' software will automatically put either p. or pp. as appropriate before the number(s).

For example:

Bell, M. & Bell, W.D. (2005) 'It's installed... now get on with it! Looking beyond the software to the cultural change', British Journal of Educational Technology, 36(4), pp. 643-656.
