Referencing Using Document it

When should I use italics in a reference?

Italics are always used for the title of the publication. Consequently, a book title would be in italics, a chapter title would not; a journal article would not be in italics but the journal name would; stand alone articles, for example from the web, would be in italics.

The other use of italics is for et al.

Examples:

A book:

Laurillard, D. (2002) Rethinking university teaching: a framework for the effective use of educational technology, 2nd edn. London: Routledge.

A chapter in a book:

Patton, M.Q. (1988) 'Paradigms and pragmatism', in Fetterman, D.M. & Smithy, B. (eds) Qualitative approaches to evaluation in education: the silent scientific revolution New York: Praeger, pp. 116-137.

A journal article:

Bell, M. & Bell, W.D. (2005) 'It's installed... now get on with it! Looking beyond the software to the cultural change', British Journal of Educational Technology, 36(4), pp. 643-656.

A stand alone article:

Bell, M. & Bell, W.D.(2004) Staff development for eLearning: innovation, cultural and organisational change - part one. Available at: http://www.bbmatters.net/bbmattersproject/Articles/article_item.asp?SubmitArticleID=101 (Accessed: 11 May 2005).

The use of et al.:

Van Driel, J.H., Verloop, N., Van Werven, H.I. & Dekkers, H. (1997) 'Teachers' craft knowledge and curriculum innovation in higher engineering education', Higher Education 34, pp. 105-122.

In-text this appears as Van Driel et al. (1997) or (Van Driel et al.,1997).
